So make sure you design your website experience in a way that resonates with your audience and provides those solutions!

2. Opt for intuitive navigation

We always recommend that businesses design a clear and straightforward navigation structure – there is no need to reinvent the wheel here! Use menus and labels in a way that makes it easy for users to find what they’re looking for.

You should also check your website traffic on Google Analytics to understand how your users are navigating your site – if people are dropping off at a specific spot, or if there are popular pages that are taking multiple clicks to get to, then you need to rearrange the navigation to reduce this friction.

3. Include clear calls to action (CTA)

CTAs serve as signposts for visitors, guiding them on what actions to take next. Without clear CTAs, your visitors might feel lost and unsure of how to interact with your website. A hard and fast rule in website design is to keep everything consistent! Design elements such as colours, fonts, menus, and button styles should be consistent to create a cohesive, polished look for your website. It not only looks good but allows your visitors to interact with your website easily and consistently.

You should also ensure that your website accurately reflects your branding. Incorporate your logo, iconography, and brand colours throughout your website.

2. Ensure ample whitespace

Whitespace – also known as negative space – helps prevent visual clutter. Think of whitespace as giving the eye a break from all the details of your website. Using whitespace strategically will help your site look ‘cleaner’ and can even help guide your visitors’ eyes exactly where you want them to go. Think about it: a promo banner will visually pop a lot more against a clear background compared to being surrounded by visual clutter!

3. Use clear & readable typography

Opt for readable fonts, paying special attention to font sizes and line spacing. We use the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to guide the typography choices for our clients, but there are other rules surrounding accessibility in web typography that you can use as a guideline as well. We’re passionate about creating an accessible experience for all, so this is a must in all our website designs!

You should also take care to ensure that the typography across your website is legible on all devices, including both desktop and mobile. It’s definitely worth testing this out across various devices to be sure.

4. Establish a clear visual hierarchy

We spoke about using content hierarchy for UX, and a clear visual hierarchy essentially supports that from a design perspective. Establishing a visual hierarchy for your content involves the use of size, color, and placement to emphasize important elements – think headings, sub-headings, and buttons – to guide your website visitors’ attention to all the important content on your website.

5. Consider your colour choices

Colour plays a really important role in your website design. Not only should your colour scheme align with your branding, but it’s also important that you understand color psychology and how different colours can influence your website visitors’ behaviour. You should also note that colour plays a role in accessibility too.

6. Use user-friendly forms

If you’re including forms in your website, like a contact form, then make sure you create a user-friendly form that is easy for your website visitors to interact with and complete. Use clear labels, validation messages, and minimal fields to reduce friction and make it easier for your website visitors to complete necessary actions.

7. Include high-quality media

When it comes to images and videos, make sure you use high-quality media wherever possible. We also recommend using tools like TinyPNG to compress these files so they take up less disk space and load faster. You should also always make it a point to include alt text for accessibility and SEO purposes.

We know we’ve said it a few times already, but it’s vital that you ensure your website is accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. Accessibility for one is accessibility for all! We also advise that you check your website traffic on Google Analytics as it can also give you a solid idea of where your website can improve.
